2011

Music Camp 2011 was held July 10–15, 2011. We had 122 campers and 25 staff. Here we all are, saying “CHEESE!”

Something new was added to Camp Lambec this year – a flock of geese! They were just walking around Camp when the staff arrived on Saturday, but they didn’t stick around very long (not after Joel started scaring them away). But we all did step a little carefully walking down near the Chapel…!

And something old was taken away. The old Rec Hall (which was deemed “unsafe and off limits” last year) was demolished. All that remains in its spot is the fireplace. While we’re all saddened by the loss, we’re also hopeful for the new Rec Hall being built at Lambec for next year!

Sunday night, between praise and worship songs at evening Club, we initiated our only rookie counselor of the year – Kevin “Slick” Schriver. Slick was a former camper, but it had been 10 years since his last Music Camp appearance… and that’s no eggs-aggeration!

Monday started with the “Pete and Dave Morning Show,” blasting dance tunes, Christian rock, and goofy jokes at 500,000 decibels. (Or thereabouts. Who needs an alarm clock? Nobody in Albion, that’s for sure…) That afternoon’s flash downpour with high winds gave us all a nice refresher course in storm shelter emergency procedures. In the evening, we played Minute to Win It, with 9 game stations throughout the vale. We had a few minor injuries that sent two campers to the ER, but (thankfully) nothing serious.

This was also the second year of our “outdoor Band Room” in the glen behind Cabins 5 and 6. Once again, it worked really well. Kristen is happy with the set-up, and the weather has been very cooperative. But with the plans for the new Rec Hall, will we move band practice back inside? Time will tell…

Since the Wednesday weather forecast looked a little chilly, we moved our signature waterslide (complete with baby shampoo) to Tuesday afternoon. This brought about our third trip to the ER (but this time, it was a counselor). We played Bible Trivia after dinner, which is the only trivia contest in America that involves this much running!

Wednesday brought a full plate of busy-ness, with the camp-wide softball game in the afternoon, and the ever-popular Capture the Flag that night. “Maybe Gaga” (covered in balloons) made an appearance to sing the rules to the campers. “Get on the right track, baby…”

Thursday’s photo scavenger hunt got everybody running all over camp snapping lots of pictures. Karl provided sound Biblical teaching (and goofy knock-knock jokes) through our Bible study materials and Club messages. And Jayne got pretty hardcore when it came to directing the choir.

Friday brought fantastic weather for our outdoor concert. (Once again, thanks be to God!) The non-band campers sang with the instrumentalists, and the Arts & Crafts group performed sign language to an all-camp rendition of “Jesus Loves Me.” The Choir concert was a bit bright and squinty at first (until the sun started to set behind the trees), but our program, titled “Into All The World,” was a wonderful way to end the week – thanking and praising God with music sung straight from the hearts of His people.

Here’s the 2011 staff, on the newly-built deck off of the boys’ wash house, which we nicknamed “The Poop Deck.” (On a completely unrelated note, this is now also the new home of the “Pete and Dave Morning Show.”)

Thanks for a great year. Hope to see you in 2012!
